Our Available Stones
Limestone
A popular choice, this sedimentary rock formed under what once was an ocean by the consolidation of sea shells.
Colours and shades may vary.
Granite
This hard igneous rock usually dark in appearance, formed from the slow crystallisation of magma cooling beneath the earths crust.
Looks great in modern urban apartments.
Marble
Usually to a polished finish this metamorphic rock has great characteristics with a wide variety of colours and patterns within the stone.
Can give your room a sleek and seductive feel.
Slate
This metamorphic rock generally has a riven finish in which you can visibly see the different layers on the surface of stone.
Gives a great rustic look to a country property.
Travertine
This rock is formed by natural springs, passing through limestone creating a whole different look when quarried. Left unfilled travertine will have pits and pocket inside and on the surface of the stone. These are filled with grout during installation. This finish gives the face of the stone a natural rough appearance. Alternatively travertine also comes honed and filled ,were the surface of the stone is smoothed.
The pit holes and pockets are filled with resin. Like limestone looks superb in most areas.
Sandstone
A sedimentary rock giving a rough grained texture to the face of the stone. Colours shades and patterns within the stone vary. It has a fantastic natural non-slip quality.
This is a natural product. Health and safety regulations must be checked prior to installation.
Ceramic
Ceramic tiles are an excellent man made product giving a consistent blend from tile to tile, however some ceramics are manufactured to give the impression of natural stone. In this case patterns and textures may vary.
Hand made ceramics generally have an inconsistancy to size, shape and shade, therefor lend themselves to be fitted with a wider joint. (5-6mm) as opposed to the commonly used 2-3mm joint
Most tiles have have a guide for the glazed tile abrasion resistance. These gradings are as follows:
Pei Grade 3
Suitable for light domestic use only. (not kitchens or entrance halls etc)
Pei Grade 4
Suitable for general domestic use and some light commercial applications.
Pei Grade 5
Suitable for most commercial applications.
Porcelain
Porcelain tiles are an excellent all round tile. Dense in its nature gives the tile strength and low water absorption rate.
Abrasion resistance gradings apply as above.
What I need to know when ordering my tiles...
When choosing ceramic or porcelain tiles each box will have a batch number. It is important to check these numbers are all the same. Shades, colours and size can vary between different batches.
When buying "off the shelf" usually in the larger diy stores, just because the boxes of tiles are on the same pallet doesn't necessarily mean they are the same batches. Quite often these batches are mixed when the stock levels are replenished.
As a rule you have to order 10% more than the area you wish to cover. This allows for the offcuts not used. It is also a good idea to have 2 or 3 tiles spare just in case of future changes or damages "You never know". In years to come you may find it difficult to get the same tile, especially with the same batch number.
Sealers and Finishes to your Stone
All natural stone must be sealed to prevent water penetration and staining.
There are different sealers available which not only prevent water penetration and staining but can also change the appearance of the stone to your favourite look.
These sealers and waxes are as follows:
Matt Sealer - Prevents water penetration and reduces the risk of staining. Will not change the appearance of the stone.
Colour Intensifier / Impregnater - Prevents water penetration and reduces the risk of staining.
The stone will appear darker, intensifying the natural colours within the stone.
Satin, Gloss and Wet Look waxes are also available to give you floor the perfect shine.
